She added that PUM’s international maritime education expert, Ton Van Essen, was currently leading a two week long “train the trainer” programme in order to assist the educators who would be teaching the new qualification. The programme began on June 12 and will be ending on Friday (June 23).

“With EMC, we are breaking new ground in the development of technical training programmes,” said MUT professor, Koos Landman. He added that by obtaining the services of an international expert in the development of the programme, the qualification would now be internationally recognised.

Tsautse also pointed out that the creation of a maritime-related curriculum would serve to close the gap between what the industry needed and the education offered at a tertiary level.
