DOT launched maritime companies and artist students’ competition.

Following the declaration at the Comprehensive  CMTP Midterm review, the National Department of Transport formally unveiled a competition that will conclude with respect to the department hosting the World Maritime Day event later this year.

The competition is open to South African maritime and shipping businesses as well as design academies or schools working individually or in collaboration.

Unpacking the maritime value chain

Maritime companies and shipping businesses are invited to enter this competition. The competition is aimed at unpacking the maritime value chain using transparent value chain analysis processes as means to demonstrate value-adding business activities in the value chain of the project cycle.

• Project criteria include:
• The project must be existing or planned
• It must be fully funded/budgeted
• It must be inspired by the Comprehensive Maritime Transport Policy
• It should be aligned to the IMO 2022 theme for World Maritime Day: New technologies for greener shipping.

The CEO of the winning bid will be awarded the opportunity to sit at the main table with the International Maritime Organisation Secretary-General during the IMO World Maritime Day parallel event to be hosted in South Africa.

Statue/trophy design competition

The second category announced by the Department is for the design of a trophy or statue and is open to design academies and schools.

The criteria for entering include:

• The artwork should be an original concept.
• The artwork should include composites or recycled materials from any marine craft.
• It should represent the 2022 CMTP Decade theme.
• Scale of each of the candidate art forms is crucial.

The Department is encouraging maritime businesses to make donations available for these works.

The winning artwork will be unveiled by President Cyril Ramaphosa with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation during the World Maritime Day Parallel event to be hosted in Durban later this year.

Timelines

Yesterday (16 May 2022) was the formal closing day for those with an interest in participating. Other Important Dates:

• 1 June 2022: Submission of concept and methodology
• 1 August 2022: Submission of value chain analysis report
• 15 September 2022: Adjudication
