A “Man’s World” description has previously been applied to the maritime sector. But in recent years, there have been numerous instances of women “Making Waves” and leaving a positive effect on those who still want to work in this field. These women not only challenge stereotypes, but they’re also breaking barriers.

EThekwini Maritime Cluster (EMC) in August 2022 highlighted some of the women in maritime on social media with the hashtag #WomenInMaritime. These ladies are hard at work improving their maritime skills while also having an impact on their communities.

This has been used as a platform to honor the industry’s trailblazers who are working relentlessly to open doors for the next Imbokodo to emerge and assertively occupy their respective spaces.

These women, along with many others, have overcome obstacles to succeed as boss leaders across the globe while embracing their femininity and compassionate nature.

We featured the tales of female maritime professionals who have made contributions to their professions in August on our social media channels. These are just a few of the numerous women who inspire older women and act as role models for young individuals entering the profession.

As one of the many organizations that help women stay empowered and motivated in a male-dominated business, EMC would like to commend the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) in South Africa. Young women should be inspired to achieve their goals and utilize all their choices, both on and offshore.

Mrs. Khuluse award winner of “Making Waves as a Newcomer”, said, ‘’Organisations such as WISTA and various Associations have provided a cocoon for women to grow, and they facilitate mentorship and coaching of women by other women which are the very hand-holding that has been missing in the sector which has resulted in the loss of skills and women opting to do other things.’’

There is still a gender disparity in the marine industry, despite an increase in the number of women in leadership and representation; for this reason, it is critical to recognize and support the women who are leading the transformation agenda.

The EThekwini Maritime Cluster would like to express their appreciation to the men in the business who have spoken out in favor of women working in the industry since this helps to create a more balanced perspective on education and technical skills for everyone.

Women of today are dismantling barriers to effect the necessary change, empowering themselves via education and job training, and adapting to the psychological demands of jobs where they must constantly prove themselves.
