Eight intern graduates had the opportunity to get first-hand lessons on how to conduct themselves at work during a Work Readiness Programme that took place over the course of three days at the EThekwini Maritime Cluster offices in Durban.

The programme, designed to help graduates adapt well to the work environment, was facilitated by Mrs. Nozipho Khuzwayo from Insight Training Solutions. The interns were guided through topics ranging from goal setting, transitioning into the working world, SWOT analyses, and how to be financially savvy, amongst other topics.

Communications and Stakeholder Relations Manager at Sandock Austral Shipyards, Ms. Nonqaba Bengu, welcomed the graduates during a guest presentation.

“Today we welcomed eight graduates from the EMC Work Readiness Programme. They did a tour around our shipyard and we are glad to have three of them join our marine draughtsman programme which is a first for us,” she said.

The interns also shared how this programme has prepared them ahead of their journey.

“In a nutshell, we have been briefed on what is expected from us in a work environment. The preparation that we have been exposed to was personally beneficial,” said Kyle Naidoo, a Project Engineer intern at EMC.

Kingdom Buthelezi, an intern at Sandock, said he gained a lot on this programme.

“The key part of the programme that played a big role is how I have to manage my money moving forward,” he said.

The interns are expected to embark on a one-year internship that commences on 2 April 2026.
