The EThekwini Maritime Cluster (EMC) took a significant stride towards fostering entrepreneurship in the maritime industry with the launch of the Maritime New Venture Creation Coaching Program. This initiative is designed to support Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) aiming to enter the dynamic sphere of maritime business launched on 19 October 2023 and ran for a period of six weeks.
EMC officially opened the doors for interested SMMEs to submit their proposals for inclusion in the coaching program. The call for applications received an overwhelming response from businesses eager to venture into the maritime sector.
After a meticulous selection process, ten (10) candidates emerged as successful participants meeting the stringent criteria set forth by the program. These enterprises have demonstrated potential and commitment to making a mark in the maritime industry.
The selected candidates will embark on a comprehensive 6-week coaching program, where they will engage in both theoretical and practical workshops. The program aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed for success in the maritime business realm.
The Maritime New Venture Creation Coaching Program objectives focused on introducing newcomers to the intricacies of the maritime industry and supporting existing players in expanding their businesses. This holistic approach aligns with EMC’s commitment to fostering growth and excellence in the maritime sector.
To enrich the learning experience, beneficiaries of the program had the opportunity to participate in exposure visits to various maritime business sites. These visits aimed to provide real-world insights and networking opportunities within the industry.

In a joyous celebration of achievement, the EThekwini Maritime Cluster (EMC) proudly commemorated the graduation of participants from the Maritime New Venture Creation Coaching Programme. The ceremony held at the Durban Club Chambers on 30/11/2023 marked the culmination of a transformative 6-week coaching journey for ten aspiring entrepreneurs in the maritime industry.
With an anchor emblem symbolizing strength and stability, the graduates received their awards and certificates, embodying the spirit of success as they embark on new ventures within the maritime sector.
The ceremony was a beacon of inspiration, featuring speeches from industry leaders (Mr. Mervin Pillay), EMC representatives (Ms. Zenzile Gwamanda), and notable mentor, Captain Londi Ngcobo, who shared insights on the significance of entrepreneurship in the maritime domain.
Each graduate was individually recognized for their dedication and resilience throughout the coaching program. The ceremony highlighted their commitment to learning, growth, and their potential to contribute significantly to the maritime business landscape.
