eThekwini Unites for World Drowning Prevention Day 2025

Durban | 25 July 2025
Together with Lifesaving South Africa, we commemorated #WorldDrowningPreventionDay with impactful community engagement and vital safety demonstrations.
The event kicked off at the KwaMashu D Section Swimming Pool, where local community and school children attended drowning and water safety demonstrations led by 3Lifesaving South Africa. The day concluded at the Durban Beachfront with formalities, swimming pool and beach prevention drills.
“Drowning is a silent epidemic stealing our most vulnerable, but it’s preventable with action,” says Lifesaving South Africa. “We need every sector—government, communities, and media to step up.”
During the 2024/2025 festive season, zero drownings were recorded at patrolled beaches—proof that intervention works.
Yet, challenges remain…
📢 Lifesaving South Africa is calling for:
• Government action from departments like Health, Education, Social Development, Cooperative Governance & more
• Community education—teaching kids to swim & supporting safe ECD centres
• Urgent infrastructure repair of public pools and safety systems
💡 Through the #WaterSmart Programme, over 1 million children have been equipped with essential water safety knowledge. Access free resources at 👉 [www.lifesaving.co.za/watersmart](http://www.lifesaving.co.za/watersmart)
