KZN Maritime Teachers Workshop 20

[13/07/2023]

EThekwini Maritime Cluster (EMC) under its Training and Skills Development Programme is mandated to train and support maritime educators teaching at high schools in KZN. Given this background, EMC facilitates an Annual Teachers’ Workshop to capacitate high school maritime teachers.

EMC in Partnership with African Marine Solutions (AMSOL), collaborated with the Department of Basic Education in KZN (DOE) and Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to ensure teachers are well-capacitated to teach maritime subjects.

The workshop launch was hosted at the Dokkies Teachers Training College – Durban where it will commence for two days before the teachers embark on a tour of the Port of Durban facilitated by TNPA.

The KZN Maritime Teachers Workshop’s last day continued in partnership with AMSOL, Transnet National Port Authority (TNPA), and the KZN Department of Education commencing at the Queen’s Warehouse with a presentation of the port overview by Ms Kiyan Bartieson. Renowned TNPA Diver and Technical Supervisor Ms Roxanne Manikkam shared the career opportunities available within the maritime sector. The 25 beneficiary educators were taken for an educational tour of the boiler-making firm and the dry dock. The last activity of the day was a waterside tour where educators were taken on a cruise tour of the harbour.

With all the information gathered during these different site visits, the aim was to cover as many aspects as possible of the maritime industry and potential career options for learners to explore. The information shared with the educators will be transferred back to the learners at school and provide guidance when it comes to them choosing subjects and assisting in the implementation of the maritime curriculum.
