Transnet has today officially signed a strategic agreement with International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) at the Durban Container Terminal (DCT) Pier 2 auditorium, a milestone set to reshape South Africa’s port logistics landscape. The partnership, that will span over 25 years and valued at approximately R11 billion, marks the formal conclusion of the agreement and the start of a new chapter focused on operational excellence at the Durban Container Terminal.
The agreement will see ICTSI invest into the modernisation and expansion of Pier 2, Durban’s busiest container terminal. The investment is expected to increase the facility’s capacity and improve South Africa’s ability to handle global trade volumes.
Speaking at event, Group Chief Executive Officer of Transnet SOC Ltd, Michelle Philips said this is a big step towards improving efficiency across the terminal and transforming our ports into world-class hubs.
“We believe that private sector participation in our ports has the potential to positively influence efficiencies, export processes and global competitiveness. I cannot overstate the strategic and economic importance of this terminal. It is the largest container facility in Southern Africa – handling 72% of the port of Durban’s throughput and 46% of South Africa’s container volumes.”
As a cluster, we congratulate Transnet and ICTSI on this landmark agreement and look forward to the positive developments it will bring. This partnership is a significant step toward unlocking investment, and uplifting the communities of Durban and other ports across South Africa. We remain committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen our maritime sector.
