The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has given stakeholders within the maritime industry the assurance that the Maritime School of Excellence in Durban is ready to launch. Deputy Director General of Curriculum Management and Delivery, Mr Mbongiseni Mazibuko, chaired a stakeholder meeting with industry leaders held at the school on Wednesday, 26 November 2025, followed by a tour of the school’s facilities.
“As the Department of Education, we are at an advanced planning stage to open the school in January 2026. The strategy of this school is only to admit Grade 8 learners. That is the strategy that we’re using at schools of this nature,” Mr. Mazibuko said.

The Maritime School of Excellence will open in 2026, with an annual enrollment of 80 Grade 8 learners – both boys and girls. An open day for parents and pupils will be announced soon.
The eThekwini Maritime Cluster would like to thank all stakeholders and partners for attending the meeting and looks forward to their continued support.
